Digital Music Blogs Bring Music to the Masses

Digital music has become mainstream – even The Beatles finally joined the party and agreed to make their music available through Apple’s iTunes store.

It has been more than seven years since Apple launched iTunes, forever changing how we get our music. Digital music is the norm for the vast majority of listeners, replacing CDs and other, even older, distribution methods.

“For consumers, digital music has become a quicker way to get introduced to and obtain new music,” says Allan Kraut, Audio Production instructor at the New England Institute of Art. “You can now have your entire collection wherever you go. It’s transportable, easily accessible, and you can search for specific songs that you want to hear.”

Kraut founded Merch Music, which allows musicians to upload their music and then print out a unique code which they can then sell to fans. The fans then come to the site and upon entering the code, can access the music they purchased. Musicians have the freedom to upload one song or a whole album per unique code. The code prints as a sticker allowing them to package the music with merchandise by sticking the code on clothing labels and other spots. Musicians pay $9.95 for 120 codes and keep any profits made after selling them to listeners.

“It gives bands an affordable way to distribute their music and make money from it at the same time,” Kraut says.

Another way fans are getting their digital music fix is through MP3 blogs, also called musicblogs and audioblogs. They do exactly what it sounds like they do – the blog creator offers music as downloads through the site. Peel is a combination of MP3 blog reader and player, allowing subscribers to stream music almost immediately after it becomes available. Founder Hjalti Jakobsson says that he started Peel as a way to automate the process of downloading digital music for himself.

“I still think it’s a niche – that is it’s mostly for people that really like to be up to date on what is happening in music,” he says. “A lot of my customers are musicians, music promoters, DJs, or people that work in the industry. However, I think that for every music fan there’s a lot of new music that goes unnoticed and the music blogs along with Peel really help discover otherwise overlooked talent.”

Music blogs are also a huge benefit to musicians, Jakobsson says.

“For musicians, getting their music out to the people is mandatory and music blogs really come into play there,” he adds. “A lot of music blogs feature music that is mainly unknown so reaching a broader audience is really important for them.”

But there can be some disadvantages to receiving and keeping music in a digital format. The most common complaint is that there is no physical keepsake when purchasing and using a piece of digital music.

“Some people still think there is value to a physical object that has music permanently embedded on it,” Kraut says. “Digital can feel temporary, like a ghost in a machine that can decide not to let you hear your music anymore, your hard drive might crash.”

Kraut adds that tangible formats of music, like records and CDs, can also give a musician more of a sense of accomplishment.

“Albums also maintain the performer’s intention for the order in which songs should be heard,” he says.

Jakobsson says that there are more positives than negatives to using digital music formats, although he does miss the experience that buying a CD or record provided.

“Personally, I think it’s not as exciting purchasing new music today,” he says. “Before I used to run to the store the day a new album by my favorite artist was released.”

Regardless of benefits and disadvantages of digital music, it does mean that more people can make music, giving the public more options than ever before.

“With digital distribution, there is less friction from maker to user and therefore tons more music available,” Kraut says. “Years ago, if you wanted to record, you needed a studio and thousands of dollars to print records. Now you can do the entire prcess out of your bedroom.”

But just because it might be easier for anyone to create digital music, it doesn’t mean they should.

“Just because you have a pen doesn’t mean you can write Harry Potter,” Kraut says.

SoundScan Officially Counting T-Shirt Albums

Exclusive: Soundscan Officially Counting T-Shirt Albums…

Who says this industry can’t work things out?  An innovative product launch that initially created friction with Nielsen Soundscan has now been ‘ironed out,’ according to deal specifics shared with Digital Music News over the weekend.

The issue started with the introduction of a creative ‘t-shirt album‘ featuring Mos Def, produced by LA-based Invisible DJ.  The shirt features a hang-tag with a redeemable download album, though Soundscan originally questioned claims that the shirts were being counted towards their album totals.

But Soundscan was quite open to the new format from the beginning, and a quick, multi-week resolution proves it.  “This is great news indeed,” Invisible DJ president Jeremy Wineberg told Digital Music News.  “We signed a deal with Soundscan and all Music Tees will be counted upon album download.”

Soundscan later confirmed the news and methodology.  According to Chris Muratore, vice president of Retail Relations and Research Services for Nielsen Entertainment, when a consumer redeems the coupon and downloads the music, a digital album sale will be reported to Nielsen Soundscan.  And just like that, a new, non-CD format is legitimately born.

Mos Def releases album via T-shirt

Mos Def’s new album ‘The Ecstatic’ is set to be released via T-shirt.

The album will be embedded in the shirt, and follows The Original Music Tee- a ‘mix tape’ shirt containing album art on the front and a play list on the back.

Each shirt has a hang-tag printed with a URL and a unique code allowing the purchaser to download the music from the album.

The shirt is produced by clothing label LnA, Downtown Music and Invisble DJ and will release on July 7 priced at $39.

‘The Ecstatic’ will be released on August 24 in the UK, and is the first from Mos Def since 2006’s ‘True Magic’.

Low-price MP3’s target new customers

As the music industry watches in horror while physical CD sales tumble and digital sales fail to bridge the gap, online MP3 retailers are trying to stem the bleeding with an age-old technique: slashing prices.

Some new releases are being priced at a mere $3.99 for a limited time on MP3, including last week’s top-selling album in both platforms, U2’s “No Line on the Horizon”; the company offers some full album downloads for 99 cents. Apple’s iTunes store runs spotlight specials for as little as $4.99. And subscription-based service Rhapsody routinely has deals for $6.99.On average, a regularly priced full album digital download costs about $10.

Online retailers are keeping tight-lipped about these bargain-basement prices, usually available for anywhere from a day to several weeks, but industry analysts say the reason behind them is simple: to attract new customers, particularly the vast majority of people who aren’t in the habit of downloading music.

Amazon MP3, a digital download offshoot of Amazon.com that launched in 2007, is in a particularly good position to convert the physical-CD-buying masses. “Amazon has customer relationships with virtually all of those people because everybody, at one time or another, has registered for an Amazon account and bought a CD from them,” says Eric Garland, the chief executive of online media metrics service Big Champagne, which tracks downloading activity.

And it’s not necessarily about trying to muscle in on the well-established turf owned by iTunes, which in 2008 became the number one music retailer in the United States. “The way one Amazon guy put it to me once: we’re not trying to steal their share of the pie, we’re trying to bake a new pie,” Garland says.

One consumer happily dishing up that pie is Dan Jungmann, 41, of Niceville, Fla., who discovered Amazon MP3 while shopping for other items on the site. Although willing to pay full price for his downloads, he’s more than happy to pay less and was stunned when he stumbled across the service’s 24-hour “Daily Deal,” which features albums for as low as $1.99. He’s recently purchased albums by artists such as Dean Martin and Chris Cornell for less than $3 apiece.

Other artists who have test-driven the fire sale price in recent months include classic Brit rocker Morrissey, indie darling Lily Allen, glam pop-rockers Killers, and country heartthrob Dierks Bentley.

Several of the labels involved in these promotions declined to comment, referring queries to Amazon, which in turn wouldn’t divulge how prices are set, how artists are chosen, and which have been the most successful. In fact, a spokesman for Amazon MP3 wouldn’t talk about most aspects of the sales promotion and the competition posed by other services beyond saying, via e-mail: “We are not focused on other companies, we are focused on customers.”

It used to be that companies could offer DRM-free tracks – tracks free of copy-protection software that made it easy to transfer among formats – as a way to attract customers, but that incentive is no longer enough, says Antony Bruno, digital editor at music industry trade magazine Billboard. “Everyone has basically gone in that direction,” he says, “so now it’s really about price.” And the price is shockingly low for a reason. “It is the schoolyard crack dealer approach,” Big Champagne’s Garland says. “We will essentially give it away in order to get you to try it because we think you’re going to get hooked, and we think you’re going to come back.”

Consider Jungmann happily strung out. “Every week I’d buy one to two downloads,” says the handyman. “And I still do that typically for full price [albums], but now that I’ve found the Daily Deal I look every day.”

So what does this kind of pricing mean for traditional record stores still selling actual CDs? “It means you have to get more aggressive about what you’re doing with your stores,” says Carl Mello, director of purchasing for New England chain Newbury Comics. Last week the chain sold the new U2 album at the discounted price of $9.99 and offered every other single-disc U2 record for $5.99.

These sales aren’t just good for digital retailers, they’re good for record companies, too. The proof is in the numbers, which spike at these price points, Garland says. “Whereas iTunes is getting iPod users to load it up with songs and pay to do that instead of doing it illegally, what Amazon is doing is getting the CD buyers to buy albums without the CD,” he says. “And the record companies love that.”

“I think any way of getting people to pay for the music they’re acquiring is a good strategy,” says Billboard’s Bruno. Mello agrees: “We’re always competing with free these days.”

Cheap just may be the answer. Former illegal file-sharer Jungmann was often dissatisfied with what he found in the peer-to-peer world of Napster and Kazaa. “It didn’t have the sound quality,” he says. Besides, he says, laughing, “It’s too much work to steal stuff.” And that should really be music to the industry’s ears.
